Art Smith, MSAA President 2010

Art Smith was sworn in as the President of the Michigan State Auctioneers Association on January 28, 2010 in Kalamazoo, Michigan at the MSAA's Annual Conference.

2010 MSAA President Art Smith is a 57 year old, first generation auctioneer from Cedar Springs, MI.  Born and raised on a small farm near Coopersville, MI. He graduated from Coopersville High School in 1970, married his wife Kim in 1972 and hired into General Motors that same year. He went to Repert Auction School in July of 1981 and like many started his auction business with a business card and a dream. He got some good breaks and held his first actual public auction in a snowstorm on April 3 1982. It was successful and his auction company got a little foothold in the local area. Art worked the Ravenna Flea Market auction every Monday morning from 1982-1984 then sold cattle at the Ravenna Livestock Market every week in 1985 & 1986. The business grew as he still worked full time at GM until his retirement with 30 years of service in 2002. His son Noah joined the business as a full partner in 2003 and along with Kim, other family members and an outstanding auction crew the business grew to include real estate, farm, antique and benefit auctions throughout Michigan, but mainly in the West Michigan area.

Hobbies include raising white face cattle, gardening and hunting North American big game.

His plan is to turn the business over to Noah in the future and work for him and grow the benefit auction business. He as earned the CAI and CES designations from the NAA. Art has attended every MSAA convention since 1983 and NAA conventions since 1999. With Gods help he hopes to be active in the auction business, the MSAA and the NAA for many years to come.
